Global warming – it’s everywhere, every day. But here at The Sweethearts Foundation, we don’t just hear it; we feel it. Through our #topsandtags initiative, we’re not only keeping plastics out of landfills and oceans but turning them into life-changing mobility aids for those in need. Every cap, every tag, brings us closer to another wheelchair, another dream fulfilled.
Recently, I’ve been making rounds to large recyclers, speaking to manufacturers, even doing a little (okay, a lot) of begging. And
while many are eager to help, they’re also part of a broader movement. This “global movement” will soon bring big changes, and while our hearts are full of gratitude, I can’t deny there’ve been a few ugly-cry moments over it too (Netflix dog movies and ice cream make surprisingly good comfort combos, by the way).
Here’s the deal: Our bread tags and bottle tops are facing some tough times. Bottle caps will soon stay glued to bottles, meaning fewer tops for us to collect. Bread
tags, our “wheelchair gold” because of their higher recycling value, will no longer be made from polystyrene. But here’s the kicker – we’re not giving up. We’ve always relied on these little pieces to make a big impact. Our model is simple, accessible, and doesn’t interfere with the livelihoods of trolley recyclers. And thanks to our incredible Sweethearts family, we’ve turned countless tops and tags into mobility treasures. But now, we’re at a crossroads, and to keep the wheels turning, we need to grow, adapt, and come together more than
ever.
So, what can we do? How can you help?
Here’s our plan to expand, going forward we will be collecting the following:

♻️Plastic Bottle Tops: Store them in a 5L water bottle—it’s easy and effective.
♻️Takeaway Coffee Cup Lids: Perfect for those caffeine-fueled moments; collect them in a grocery delivery brown bag.
As you set up your Sweethearts Collection Station, don’t forget to label each container clearly!
